Top 3 Reasons To Hire A Move In Cleaning Service

Moving is a time-consuming process with many different components that need to be accounted for during an important time. Arriving at your new place and seeing that several areas need a proper cleaning adds another level of responsibility when you’re stretched thin.

To ease any extra demands, consider bringing a move-in cleaning service on board. Here at Clarkston Cleaning, we perform this often for those around Clarkston, MI. Here are the top three benefits of taking the step.

Worry-Free

Moving can be overwhelming and stressful. Let the professionals ease your worries – we are reliable and fully insured! With such a significant focus on packing up years of memories and prized possessions, completing paperwork, and finalizing logistics, you can easily outsource the cleaning to make time for other more critical tasks.

Take a look at your list of to-do’s that you have left to accomplish throughout the moving process. Our professional cleaning services can check off several of those items, giving you a bit of breathing space during this hectic time!

Save Time

When you hire a cleaning company, you save yourself valuable time that you could spend unpacking and enjoying your new space. Trying to clean all the rooms of your new place appropriately is time-intensive and utilizes a great deal of energy – the energy you don’t have an abundance of during this life change!

Instead of spending those first few days in a state of frustration and stress, bring on a move in cleaning service to make those days memorable and exciting. You’ll find that having a bit of wiggle room in your schedule will help you process the many emotions you’re going through and save energy for the fun parts of the move, like decorating and setting up your new rooms!

Deep Clean

At Clarkston Cleaning, our staff is adequately trained to provide a thorough cleaning of your home, including the surface areas that most people don’t even think about. With everything going on in the days leading up to your move and after, it can be hard to carve out the appropriate time needed to get a deep clean of your new space.

At times, not having the ability to perform this task ahead of time can cause you to feel a sense of discomfort in your home. Walking into a clean slate that is sanitized and ready for your items can be exactly what you need to be able to instantly relax and enjoy your new place called home.

In Summary

Moving is no easy feat. There are a lot of different elements that comprise the process, each with its own set of tasks and responsibilities. While this is a lot to handle, there are avenues that make it easier to tackle.

One of those routes is hiring a move-in cleaning service, such as the one we offer at Clarkston Cleaning. If you are interested in exploring more, give us a call to find out about our services and get a quote for cleaning a new house before moving in.

Grads and Dads

Grads and Dads, Clarkston Cleaning services, blogs

Seniors and Fathers

Seniors and fathers, otherwise known, this time of year, as Grads and Dads. We’re pleased as punch that we will be able to celebrate them this year! We thought we’d share some ideas on how to make their day special.

The Graduates

If you have family or friends graduating this year, whether from high school or college, how would you like to show them how proud you are? Some folks might want to throw big parties (maybe still a no-no at this time) or perhaps have a nice dinner out with close friends. While not as restricted as last year, it’s best to do some research ahead of time, just in case.

It’s true, the best gifts are personal. If you don’t know the grad well, ask someone who does. Teens especially can be vague or uncertain about their future plans so, asking the right questions can give you a whole bunch of ideas and might look like this:

Where’s a place to eat that you’d like to try but haven’t yet been able to?

  • Get a gift card for that place or another similar eatery that has good ratings.
  • Or just a gift card to their already favorite hangout.
  • A cookbook for that kind of cuisine or food preference.

Do you have a field of study you’re interested in?

  • Are there books on that topic or maybe textbooks for college classes they would like?
  • Is there a set of tools they may need or want to explore in this field?

What are your plans for the summer?

  • If they are moving, maybe they need some basic home supplies for a new apartment.
  • If they are traveling, perhaps a new suitcase or travel gear.
  • Cash is always the right color and size

Do they need help with something else they wouldn’t feel comfortable asking for?

  • Are they saving for a car or repair?
  • Are mom and dad strapped and can’t help?
  • Do they need help finding appropriate work?
  • Are they moving out of the house and need rent/deposit money?
  • Do you have a useful skill or knowledge that would help them?

Dear Old Dad

Unlike young people, dads are more settled in their ways and generally easier to buy for. Even if your dad is gruff and grumpy, there’s almost always a soft spot or two you can hone in on for a great Father’s Day gift. Most dads will not ask for anything…many can go out and buy what they need for themselves. Instead, sleuth out ideas by observation or listening to what he mainly talks about.

Does he collect something or have a hobby?

  • Stamps, bugs, car parts? See what he doesn’t have and find it, if possible.
  • Books on his favorite subject.
  • Does he like craft beer or like hot sauce? Get him a subscription or kit to putter around with!

Is there someone he hasn’t seen in a while?

  • Is it possible to arrange a reunion for them?
  • Look up some military or school buddies or family members he’d like to see again.

Is there a favorite place he hasn’t been to for a long time?

  • Take a road trip with dad.
  • Get a wall map made of his hometown.

Dads love to be ‘needed’.

  • Ask him to help you with a repair of an odd job, then take him to lunch.
  • Ask him to teach you something he knows how to do. Change a tire? Barbequing? Gardening?
  • Write him a love letter.
  • Have him tell you stories of his youth and really listen. You might see dad in a new light!

Whether you want to plan a grand fete or just something close and personal, it’s a busy time of year! Now that spring has finally sprung, some help around the house will make everyone happy campers. We want to tick one more thing off that to-do list for you!

5 Spring Cleaning Tips To Help You Conquer Spring Cleaning Week

5 Spring Cleaning Tips To Help You Conquer Spring Cleaning Week

5 Spring Cleaning Tips To Help You Conquer Spring Cleaning Week

While you may not hear many people celebrating that it is near, we are excited that National Spring Cleaning Week is just around the corner! Every fourth Sunday in March marks the occasion, and we are coming at you with our best spring cleaning tips!

If this isn’t a task you want to tackle on your own, we provide reinforcements to areas around Oxford, Ortonville, and Rochester, MI. Our cleaning services will have you set up for the warmer months ahead. And if you do plan to go it alone, review our best tips below!

Make a Schedule

Spring cleaning is not something that you’ll tackle in a short period. To avoid getting overwhelmed and frustrated with the process, make a cleaning schedule. Giving yourself a room or two per day to clean to completion can help you avoid burnout and save your body some pain from the rigorous cleaning!

Organize and Clear the Clutter

We all know that our tastes and hobbies change throughout the years. However, we also need to remember it isn’t necessary to hold onto all the memorabilia from past ventures and clothes that have long been outgrown. National Spring Cleaning Week is the perfect time to sort through all the clutter and organize it neatly where it belongs.

Tackle the Seasonal Chores

While you may walk into a room and immediately see the clothes that need folding, or the dishes that need doing, be sure that you focus first on the things that need to be done seasonally. While the other items will also need to happen, spring cleaning is the time to focus on the chores you couldn’t accomplish while it was cold. Therefore, put your immediate focus on cleaning windows and airing out the house!

Clean Room by Room

Another way to avoid burnout is to go one room at a time. Be sure to reference our cleaning list to help you cover all of your bases in each type of room in your home. If there is a takeaway from any of our spring cleaning tips, let it be not to cram everything into a short period. Do one room at a time and use a schedule to preserve your energy.

Always Work from Top to Bottom

When was the last time you got rid of the cobwebs in the corners of your bathroom? So often, we are focused on what we immediately see that the things out of our view aren’t attended to regularly. When spring cleaning, be sure to work from the top of the room to the bottom. This strategy will help you tackle the infrequent tasks often pushed to the side.

In Summary

With National Spring Cleaning Week just around the corner, we felt inclined to share our best spring cleaning tips. However, if this is something you don’t have time for, we offer a Spring Cleaning Package and would be happy to get the job done for you.

5 Thoughtful Gifts for The Woman Who Wants Nothing

5 Thoughtful Gifts for The Woman Who Wants Nothing

When you are considering a gift for your significant other, you want one that shows you care. Many immediately turn to flowers, chocolates, and other material forms of appreciation. While these are often well-received, they aren’t always at the top of their wish list.

While some women prefer those gifts, others prefer something more personal. For those women in your life, we have five gift ideas that will bring them great joy.

1. A Clean House

Can you imagine the level of surprise you will observe when your loved one comes home to a clean house? Not just that, but one that is professionally scrubbed to shine? Cleaning is a massive part of a person’s schedule, and eliminating something so time-consuming will free up a significant amount of time you can spend together.

Better yet, surprise her with a gift card. This option allows the giftee to choose when they want a break from cleaning or even set up a routine cleaning service. Clarkston Cleaning offers gift cards of various amounts, and they are easy to acquire last-minute!

2. A Relaxing Day or Night At Home

Pampering is always a welcome gift, but it can be pricey to get a spa gift card for the one you care most about. Please don’t feel like you need to break the bank to provide them with some self-care!

Gathering a basket of items, including face masks, manicure and pedicure kits, hair masks, high-quality lotions, and some relaxing bubble baths, can provide the setting for a relaxing day or night at home.

3. Date Night

Schedules fill up very quickly. Therefore, getting a proper date night on the books can become nearly impossible with all the competing responsibilities you both have. Taking the initiative to get reservations at your significant other’s favorite restaurant can be a wonderful surprise and provide quality time together.

Are you struggling to find a babysitter, or does the restaurant you want not have times available? Make their favorite meal at home and enjoy it after the kids go to bed!

4. Tickets To An Event

Getting out of the house to enjoy something together is time well spent. Whether it’s a concert you both want to see, or a new movie coming out, you will come away with great memories of the event attended and the company you were with.

If you aren’t sure what is available in your area, check out the Michigan Events Monthly Calendar for ideas.

5. A Weekend Away

Taking the time to have a weekend away doesn’t have to be an all-out affair. It’s unnecessary to bring airline tickets or lengthy road trips into the mix. Instead, you can book a bed and breakfast the next town over and enjoy each other’s company for an uninterrupted weekend.

If you’re stuck on where to go and stay, check out Places To Stay in Michigan for top areas in the state.

In Conclusion

Giving a gift to your significant other doesn’t have to focus on material goods. If you are searching for something for the woman who wants nothing, consider her love language and find something that ties into that trait.

Whether they prefer acts of service, quality time, or something in between, there are various options that you can choose. What’s more, almost all of them appreciate the gift of residential house cleaning. Reach out to Clarkston Cleaning for a Gift Card today!

National Cupcake Day

National Cupcake Day

Cupcakes hit the scene in 1796 resemblance to English Fairy Cakes but in 1828 cupcakes became official which written reference to the cupcake appears in Eliza Leslie’s “Seventy-Five Recipes for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats”.  Hostess starts mass-producing its first snack cake in 1919.  In 1950 Winston Churchill was the first person to suggest cupcakes should be frosted.  Make your cupcakes plain or adorn them with edible embellishments. So, remember December 15th is a national cupcake day.

    Christmas Tree Cupcakes

For the cupcake

½ cup vegetable oil

¾ cup sour cream

¾ cup heavy cream

4 eggs

1 box of chocolate cake mix

¼ cup cocoa powder

For the frosting

2 cups butter; cold and cut into chunks

10 cups powdered sugar

2 tablespoons vanilla

½ cup plus 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Pinch of salt

Additional Items you will need

Green food coloring

1M piping tip

Piping bag

Golden star sprinkles

Holiday sprinkles

How to make the cupcakes:

  1. Preheat the oven to 325. Line your cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
  2. Mix together, either by hand or in a stand mixer, the oil, vanilla, sour cream, heavy cream, and eggs. Then mix in the boxed caked mix and cocoa powder.
  3. Scoop the batter into your cupcake liners, use ¼ measuring cup.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Make sure to bake all the cakes on the same oven rack so they bake evenly
  5. Let the cupcakes cool for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire cooling rack. Let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting.

How to make the frosting:

  1. In a stand mixer, whip your butter chunks on medium-high speed until the butter is light and fluffy.
  2. Add in the powdered sugar 1 cup at a time.
  3. Once the powdered sugar becomes hard to incorporate add in the vanilla, heavy cream, and salt, allowing the ingredient to be incorporated fully.
  4. Add in green food coloring until you get the green you are looking for.

How to decorate cupcakes:

  1. Using your 1M piping tip and the green frosting frost your cupcakes. You want to build the frosting up while moving the bag and tip in a circular motion.
  2. Place a star at the top and then use other sprinkles to decorate the tree.

Tips:  Add sprinkles immediately after you make the tree.  If the frosting sets up the sprinkles will not stick.  To make a darker green-colored frosting stir in a tiny bit of blue and black food coloring to the green frosting.

Fall Yard and Garden Cleanup

fall yard and garden clean up, clarkston cleaning services

Fall Yard and Garden Cleanup

Fall Yard and Garden Cleanup. Think about how you clean your house?  “Top” to bottom, right?  Let gravity help you!

  • Whether it’s you or you hire a local tree service, get some of those dead and broken branches trimmed off. No pruning!  Just the dead stuff. This could spare you some roof damage in the winter and early spring from heavy snow.
  • Be sure to save a few of the smaller twigs and branches for composting.  The strength of the branches can help aerate new compost piles.
  • While you’re up there….get those gutters hosed out too.

Rake, Rake, Rake…

We know…raking isn’t a fun thing to do, but it’s fun making big piles to jump in!  After you’ve done this, don’t throw them all out!  Unless you have a fair number of trees, let nature insulate and nourish your gardens, and here’s how:

  • Adding a thick layer around the base of rose bushes and other tender flowers will protect the root crowns from extreme temperatures and also give natural nutrients to the soil.
  • Mulching the flower and garden beds will help conserve moisture to save on winter watering.
  • If you have a lot of leaves, bag them up and get the kids to “smoosh” them.  This helps break the leaves down, save space and bags, and gets the kids outside for some fun!  Set aside a couple for replenishing mulch during the cold season.
  • Nobody can rake ALL of it up, but leaves are also good mulch for lawns…as long as it’s not covering the grass.  Once raking is done, mow the lawn on the “mulch” setting one last time to chop it up and get it down in between grass blades.

 Vegetable and Flower Gardens

When the last of the harvest has been taken in, it’s time to put the bed…to bed.  After the first hard frost, pull out any diseased plants and weeds and trash them.  Everything else can be tilled under to help provide nutrients and fertilize the earth.

  • If you have it now, add a nice layer of compost over the top.
  • Use the raked-up leaves to make a deep covering over the whole bed….like a foot deep.
  • Cover the leaf layer with old pallets, chicken wire, or larger dead branches to keep the leaves and topsoil from blowing away in the winter winds.
  • This cover also insulates the earthworms and other beneficial insects so they can do their work.

 Clean Up with Compost!

Composting is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to have gorgeous flowers and abundant fruit and vegetable harvests and should be part of everyone’s fall yard and garden clean-up!  Safer than chemicals, building a compost pile is really easy!  Non-meat kitchen scraps, some dirt and dead leaves (which you now have an abundance of), and twigs are the ideal living space for a microbiome. Hint: earthworms L.O.V.E. coffee grounds!  Make sure you keep those (non-flavored varieties) in your pile as well.

Lastly, be sure to tidy up the yard.  Clear out corners and areas that could become a home for some unwanted critters.  Be careful restocking firewood as black widow spiders love these undisturbed areas.  Plant any bulbs at this time for a beautiful spring showing!  Gather up the tools and summer yard decorations and get them cleaned up and put away for the season.

While you’re in the yard be sure to call for a deep Fall cleaning so that everything is done inside and out and you’re ready for winter. Now that’s a job well done!

Fall Hikes with Your Family

Fall Hikes with Your Family, clarkston cleaning services, residential house cleaning service, Maid service, move in, move out, deep clean, spring clean, gift cards

Fall Hikes with Your Family

Fall Hikes with Your Family. Ah, September!  The softest of all months…not too hot and not too cold.  Life is (hopefully) back to a routine with kids in school, homework, and weekend activities.  Why not plan some fall hikes with your family?

Of course, Michigan has some of the most brilliant fall foliage in the country, but have you really gone out there to explore our beautiful state this time of year?  So, plan a weekend of fall hikes with your family with leaf-peeping and some bird watching? After spending the better part of the summer cooped up, it’s time to get some fresh air!  The hikes can be as educational as they are fun, and everyone can learn about the great state of Michigan.

 When is the Best Time?

The best time for full-color is from mid-September to the end of October, so if you miss a weekend because of weather or other obligations, no worries.  Going somewhere right in the middle of that time frame should be the most vibrant.

Need some ideas to choose from?  Michigan is such a diverse state that surely everyone in the family will be satisfied.  Apples and fishing and hikes, oh my!

For some family fun, how about something like a Scavenger Hunt? Or Bird Bingo? You have time to plan it.  For a scavenger hunt, try collecting leaves from native trees on your hike!  With the whole family involved, you’ll have a beautiful collection for crafting some fall-season home decorations.  You can learn about individual trees from the Arbor Day Foundation so you can identify the leaves!  First, one to collect a leaf from each tree wins a prize!

Your fall hike with your family wouldn’t be complete without the birdsong in the background!  Be sure to pack the binoculars and watch for these sweet creatures out on your hikes!  Make a Bird Bingo card and see how many you can find!

Where Should We Go?

How do you want to spend the weekend? Or do you want to go for day hikes with your family?  Near and far, opportunities abound to see the colors, from neighborhood walking paths to state parks.  If there is somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit, maybe now would be a good time to go!  Winter will be here soon and there’s no time like the present, right?

Put together a fabulous picnic with foods your family loves and be sure to visit some roadside or Farmer’s Markets along the way to add to it.  Some fresh-pressed apple cider and local cheese would be a great way to expand your family’s food repertoire! Yum! Maybe you’ll find a new secret getaway or fishing spot. Make notes so you know where to go back!

The silver lining that Covid has brought to us is the value of family and how precious and short our time is with them.  Now that things are resuming a more familiar pattern, make sure to include more quality family time.

Baby Safety Month

Baby Safety Month

Baby Safety Month is September. Tiny humans are so cute! Those toes, right? Did you know that September is dedicated to ‘baby safety? We didn’t either and when we ran across this little gem, we thought it would be a good thing to share!

Whether you have one baby or a few children, keeping the little ones protected is the number one goal. We found some interesting history that you may not know.

  • The baby gate was invented in 1906.
  • The first car seat appeared in 1962, but it wasn’t until 1985 that the US required children to be strapped into one for car travel. Incidentally, car seat belts were not made standard equipment until 1968 and didn’t become mandatory to use until 1986.
  • Former President Nixon signed into law the Toy Safety Act which gave the government the authority to test and ban children’s toys for hazards.

If you consider those dates, you might also figure out that your grandparents, or even your parents, were kids before some of these laws were on the books. We’ve learned a lot over the years and some of us “older” folks look back and wonder that we made it through unscathed! At your next family gathering, ask them about their adventures as children without is now considered normal safety measures! It could make for some good conversation.

Education

So, where does one go to learn the latest developments on child safety? Baby safety month was started by The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). Use the “Parents” drop-down menu for a number of topics like baby monitors, best practices for disinfection (including Covid-19 protocols), and things to keep in mind when buying second-hand.

To stay on top of safety alerts, we like the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. Helping Our Pets During the Fireworks

Helping Our Pets During the Fireworks

Helping Our Pets During the Fireworks

It’s probably safe to say that our Independence Day festivities are going to be big this year. With our country getting back on its feet after the pandemic, folks are keen to see and celebrate with family and friends. Many may be inclined to go ‘big’ on the firecrackers this summer.

We get that…but our pets don’t.

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Even though some pets appear to have ‘selective hearing’, dogs, in particular, have a very acute audible range. Comparatively, humans are nearly deaf. So, just for a moment, imagine having a microphone and a cranked-up amplifier of the sound of fireworks right next to you. Would you think that it might be too loud? Probably so. This could be a good way to empathize with your dog (cats too) when it comes to using fireworks.

As humans, we know that we’re about to hear loud noises and can protect our ears in preparation. Each and every ‘POP’, ‘BANG’, ‘BOOM’ is a surprise to our animals, so they can get understandably upset. With the smells of smoke and the vibrations from being in close proximity to the massive public pyrotechnic displays, to them, the world is coming to an end.

“More pets run away on the Fourth of July than any other day, so you should take extra steps to ensure their safety.” ~CesarsWay.com

Animals process things differently than humans do. If loud noises are used with a dog or cat for disciplinary purposes, how will they know the difference between fireworks? If they bolt out of fear, they could put themselves, or the children chasing them, in danger.

What NOT to Do…

If your dog or cat is already particularly anxious, fireworks could just send them over the edge.

  • Don’t punish the dog for being frightened.
  • Don’t try to desensitize them by making loud noises. This kind of training takes time and patience to be effective. A few days before a planned event is not enough.
  • Don’t force the animal to come out of a hiding place until they’re ready.

Try these instead…

We know you love your pets and want to include them in your family activities. Experts say that the following are best practices for your animals with respect to fireworks.

  • Walk and play with them during the day when the fireworks are not as frequent. Love them up.
  • Leave them at home if you plan to go to a large gathering or public place with fireworks. Even if your dog is acclimated to these kinds of situations, other dogs in the area may not be. Puppies especially may learn to fear loud noises if another dog is demonstrating that same fear. Best for everyone’s sanity to just keep the pooches at home. Even better if a trusted person can stay with them.
  • Give them a place to hide, like a kennel or room where they feel safe. Soundproof the room or area as much as possible, and close windows and shades. If you’re using a kennel box, be sure to leave one part open so they can see out.
  • Surround them with favorite toys or even an item of clothing from a family member. Having something to chew on to release anxiety can help curb destructive behavior or self-harm.
  • If you must bring your pet, be sure their ID is secure and current in case they runoff. Keep a close eye on them and look for signs of anxiety and stress including:
  • Panting and drooling
  • Pacing
  • Shivering
  • Jumpiness

Make sure someone can sit with them and comfort them in low easy tones. Keep them leashed or safe in a kennel.

We at Clarkston Cleaning want to wish all of you and your pets an enjoyable, happy, and safe 4th.

Just Because It’s Summer

Just Because It’s Summer

Just Because It’s Summer

Just because it’s summer…  It’s back! We are looking at summertime like a long-lost friend! Seems like forever, doesn’t it? But just because it’s summer doesn’t mean we don’t have to keep up with regular chores. Some are made worse when it’s hot out! I know, I know… Here are some reasons why and what to do.

Warmth and Germs Love Each Other

Most people associate the warm months with vacations and beaches, patio dinners, and running through the sprinklers. In other words, being outdoors most of the time. But often, our “in”-doors get neglected regarding cleaning. Doors and windows are left open so there’s more air circulation and less-than-pleasant smells are not as noticeable.

Clothing, whether it’s work or play clothes, just the heat of this time of year makes us all sweat more. Do you know how your teenager’s room smells? Yeah, that. Except multiply that by all the family members. Try line drying the clothes for a few months. This will save money on your electricity bills and give your clothing a good dose of UV to kill the germs created by sweaty bodies.

Garbage, defined as: “wasted or spoiled food and other refuse, as from a kitchen or household” is the wet/sticky/scraps that we throw in our waste cans. Let them sit for a hot day in a closed container and you might just be knocked back a couple of feet by the smell. Meat waste like trimmings and bones are particularly susceptible to spoilage. Food poisoning is more common in the summertime and is no fun. Make a habit of taking the garbage out daily or having a special bag for just food leftovers and get them out of the house.

Dirty Dishes have a habit of building up as people run in and out of the house for snacks and cold drinks. Even the small bits of food left can create foul odors quickly. Encourage the family to scrape dishes into the garbage and/or rinse them off. Run the disposer at least once a day and maybe throw in a lemon or orange peel to freshen it up. Once or twice a month (all year actually) add a cup of baking soda and vinegar to it and let it volcano up in your sink and entertain you for a few seconds. (Good chore for kids?) Wash it down 10 minutes later with some hot-hot tap water.

 Rain or Shine

In and out, in and out. Kids, cats, and dogs can’t seem to make up their minds about where they want to be. While it’s best to leave shoes at the door, it’s not so easy to keep up with the traffic. Who knows what everyone has walked or run through especially if there are pets around…you get the drift. Buy a bunch of dollar store flip-flops in assorted sizes for indoor use by the most used door for ease of rule enforcement. This will help keep the worst of it at bay.

DIY season

And then there’s the home repairs and remodeling that are so common this time of year. It’s also a fairly universal habit to just “let things go” while the work is being done because why clean when it’s just going to get trashed again until it’s finished. That’s fair logic to a point, but if one area gets neglected then often the whole thing gets neglected. And if it’s a BIG project, like remodeling a bathroom, then things can get out of hand quickly.

Whether you are doing it yourself or have a contractor, make it a point to have things tidied up at the end of the workday. Sweep up sawdust and other potentially hazardous debris and get the power tools unplugged and put away.

Keeping the house ship-shape, even during the lazy hazy days of summer! Sometimes it’s just easier (and worth the $$ spent) to let us help you keep up indoors while you go enjoy the “out”-doors!

5 Biggest Cleaning Myths

5 Biggest Cleaning Myths, Clarkston Cleaning Services, residential house cleaning service, Maid service, move in, move out, deep clean, spring clean, gift cards

5 Biggest Cleaning Myths

1. Myth: If One Product is Good, Two Must Be Better.

Mixing cleaning products without at least a little basic chemistry knowledge can actually have deadly consequences. Here are a few major no-nos:

  • Vinegar and Bleach
  • Ammonia and Bleach
  • Detergents and Disinfectants that Contain Quaternary Ammonia

In short, acidic products, like vinegar, should never be mixed with alkali products, like bleach. Even combining one brand of bleach with another can be dangerous. When it doubt, stick to one product.

2. MythDIY Cleaning Products are Always Better.  5 Biggest Cleaning Myths

Now, to be clear, we’re not knockin’ on natural or DIY cleaning products. Nor are we throwing our support behind harsh, commercial cleaners. The problem, though, is that DIY cleaners can be ineffective at best, or toxic at worst. The big problem here is that many people automatically think DIY = safe, and store-bought = unsafe. As with most things, life just isn’t that simple. Do your research. Spot-check with certain cleaners to see if they’re effective.

3. Myth: Bleach (or Vinegar, or Whatever Else) is the Only Product You Really Need.  5 Biggest Cleaning Myths

There are plenty of multi-purpose cleaners out there that will do just as well on your counters as they will on your floor. But that doesn’t mean that bleach, for instance, should be used to clean dirt — it doesn’t — or vinegar should be used on your hardwood floors — it’ll dull the finish. There is no single product out there that will work for all of your needs.

4. Myth: The More Product You Use, the Better.

More is not always better! More soap on your counters will just lead to buildup. Too much detergent use is one of the most common reasons dishwashers need to be repaired. Too much carpet cleaner will only make your carpet get dirtier faster. There are directions for a reason — follow them!

5. Myth: The Amount of Detergent You Use Doesn’t Really Matter.

Washing machines and laundry detergent have gotten much more efficient in the past few decades — so why are we using the same amount of soap? It might not seem like a big deal, but using the appropriate amount of laundry detergent for your load will extend the life of your washer and your clothes.

How to Have a Real Vacation

How to Have a Real Vacation, clarkston cleaning services, blogs

How to Have a Real Vacation

“I need a vacation from my vacation!” How many times have you heard someone say that, or even uttered the words yourself?

Sometimes getting away is more work than it should be, right? It’s supposed to be relaxing and refreshing and give us new energy for our family and work. Ah…tis often not the case. We’re here to help you make the most of your time off with some tips on how to have a real vacation.

(Way) Before You Go…

Because last year many travel plans had to be canceled, you may be doubly anxious to get the heck outta Dodge, but…not so fast pardner! The pandemic is still a major factor for numerous popular destinations, so it’s time to work out a couple of Plan B’s. We say: ‘Preparation is never a waste of time’ and how well the preplanning goes may well determine the quality of your time off.

  • Money is, of course, the #1 factor. Make a solid budget. You hopefully already have a cash stash for your getaway. Scale back your plans if it’s not a lot. Keep credit cards for emergencies only so you don’t create another financial stressor. Be realistic about how much things cost, and the extra expenses involved with traveling.
  • Research your desired destinations. Pricing has changed dramatically since last year and you may have to rethink where you want to, or can, go. Outside the country is still pretty restricted. Why not travel to our country…lots to see here and you’ll help bring our economy back up.
  • Car Maintenance, if you are taking a road trip, should be part of your pre-trip costs. Get the oil changed, fill the fluids, maybe have the interior detailed, rotate or buy new tires if necessary. Tell your mechanic your plans if you have an older vehicle and ask if your car is in good enough shape for the trip. Renting a car may be cheaper than risking a breakdown midway (and less stressful).
  • Try clothing on in advance. The “19” in Covid-19 could possibly stand for the extra weight gained last year. So you don’t tap out your budget on new outfits, try shopping at thrift stores and consignment shops for your travel wardrobe! New clothes for cheap! Win!
  • Make a Checklist when you’re not in a rush. Look around your house to see what might trigger a “to-do” for when you leave. Nothing is worse than walking out the door and forgetting a major task, like paying your utility bill or buying dog food for your house sitter.

During Your Trip!

Yay! You’re on your way! Whatever your plans, make sure that the “getting away” part is actually fun and relaxing. Some tips to enjoy your trip more are:

  • Don’t try to do too much. Frantically cramming in as much as possible will surely spoil all the fun. If your itinerary has something to be accomplished every day, you’re missing the point of a vacation.
  • Be flexible with your time. Spontaneity can add a lot of spark to your holiday.
  • Down. Your. Phone. If you feel the need to post nearly every moment of your time away, then you haven’t really gone “away”. Yes! Take pictures and maybe post one or two but save the bulk of your “insta” and another social media posting for when you get back.
  • RE-LAX! Sleep until you wake up. Sit and read a book (a FUN book…no self-help or politics) all day. Have midday cocktails. Find out where the locals go for fun. Eat the ice cream or yummy dessert. Try new foods.

As a final treat, and maybe the best one, for your vacation…hire Clarkston Cleaning to scrub your home while you’re gone!  When you get back, all you will have to do is unpack and do some laundry. What a great finale for your trip!

Top 8 Signs It’s Time to Hire a Cleaning Service-Auburn Hills

Today, many Americans are busier today than ever before. We are stretched to the limit by work, school, and parenting. Some, have eldercare responsibilities. Cleaning services can help modern families.  Moreover. you will have more of life’s most valuable commodity, precious time.

Adults are working more hours and often continue to labor when they arrive home. Also, many in the “sandwich generation” attend school plays and chauffeur their children to soccer practice. Some must also see to the needs of grandparents or parents. In addition, they are also taking them to doctor’s appointments, helping them with household tasks, and shopping.  Clearly, finding a little downtime for themselves or time to spend on leisurely family activities can be nearly impossible.

One way working adults can claim back a little of their “me” time is by hiring a maid service. A housecleaning service will take care of their household cleaning needs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals over the age of 15 spend on average about 21 hours per week on unpaid household labor. We are preparing meals, clean, maintain, and repair. Hiring a cleaning service can help men and women reclaim valuable time. Now, they can spend time on hobbies, with family and friends. Maybe, just resting and recharging.

When It’s Time to Hire a Cleaning Top 8 Signs-Hire A Cleaning Service

If you’re not sure whether hiring a cleaner is right for you and your family, consider these tips. Afterward, you will know for sure when to put down the Swiffer and call in a professional:

• If you’re working long hours Top 8 Signs-Hire A Cleaning Service

Whether you’re a mechanic in an auto shop or a white-collar office worker, long hours at work take a lot out of you physically and mentally. Having to come home to a mountain of laundry or a sink full of dishes isn’t going to help your stress or fatigue levels. Having a professional cleaner take care of the cleaning leaves you better able to focus on your work.

• If cleaning isn’t your thing  Top 8 Signs-Hire A Cleaning Service

We all have different talents and different weak spots. Some people just aren’t good at cleaning. Why end up spending hours doing a poor job on tasks other people can complete quickly and nearly effortlessly. If you’re spending hours on a no-win battle against dust and dirt calling in a maid service might be a good idea. Maids specialize in cleaning, it’s their job. Leaving cleaning in their hands ensures that the job gets done right.

• Special occasions

Some households don’t require a regular cleaning service. Many, just need help getting ready for special occasions like engagement parties, weddings, birthday parties, and other events. A cleaning service can help organize your home to prepare for special days in the life of your family. For once-in-a-lifetime events, you want your home to be in excellent condition. House cleaners make this much easier and are often more effective in deep cleaning than individuals. In summary, you will be busy with invitations, guest lists, catering, and other tasks. Let a Cleaning service help.

• Do the math

Calculate how much you get paid per hour at work and determine how many hours you spend per week on cleaning. Tasks like mopping, dusting, and vacuuming. Then, consider how much a weekly or monthly cleaning service would cost. Chances are that hiring a cleaning service would be cheaper than the amount you would pay yourself for these tasks.

• Helping your parents

Many men and women today are taking care of their parents and grandparents as they get older. They find themselves helping them with various household tasks such as lawn care and cleaning. This detracts from the time that they can spend in their own homes or on leisure activities. Hiring a maid service can provide your parents or grandparents with help cleaning. This will allow you a little downtime.

• Lack of leisure time

When was the last time you had a drink with your co-workers? When did you last get to go on a vacation or just to a movie? If it’s been a while, you may want to consider cutting down on your home cleaning commitments. Obviously, this will help to free up time to do the things you love. A few hours saved each week can add up over the course of a year to quite a bit of free time.

• Getting ready to sell

If you’re preparing to sell your home, it pays to have it cleaned by professionals. Appearances are everything when it comes to selling real estate. A move-in/move-out deep cleaning by a professional cleaning service can help get your home ready for prospective buyers. Professional cleaners have the tools and training to get your house back into mint condition. This will allow you to negotiate higher sale prices from people interested in buying your home.

• Consider your health

Chemicals associated with cleaning, such as sprays, bleach, or mopping solutions can be harmful to your health. Especially with people with respiratory or other medical issues. If you feel ill after cleaning, or if the tasks involved exhaust you, hiring a cleaning service will help. Professional products will help ensure that your home stays clean and you stay healthy.

Downtime Essential for Health

Finding time for rest and leisure activities is important for physical and mental health. Experts suggest that adults get at least eight hours of sleep per night to maintain good physical and mental health. Studies also warn that adults who work more than 60 hours per week are at greater risk for heart attack.

Show them the love

Show them the love

Show Them the Love

The strains of the last year have us all walking around frazzled. Now it’s time for Valentine’s Day. Telling the people we love how we feel is sometimes lost in the shuffle of everyday life, let alone in times of stress and struggle. Instead, show them the love you know they deserve.

I do every day, I think?

Some folks can relax in the comfort of their relationships. A good thing, but reaffirming that comfort is better. Some of us are a little insecure and need to be assured that the world isn’t shaking things up. Especially in uncertain times.

So, don’t think, know that you have expressed your feelings and affection. We’re here to help you shake it up on your own. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.

What do they hear?

Do you actually know what proves your love…to them? Maybe you’re buying flowers or doing laundry, but what they want are hugs and kisses. A “well done!” is great but doing the dishes for them might be better.

A Southern Baptist pastor named Dr. Gary Chapman wrote a book 19 years ago called, “The 5 Love Languages” and it was quite the sensation! On daytime TV talk shows and touted worldwide, he sold millions of copies. Aimed primarily at Christian couples, the book was designed to teach a person the language of their loved ones. For example, giving your teenager all the gadgets they want may not convey to them your affection like a long talk would. YOU know you love them, but do they?

Take the Quiz

People often don’t know what they want, really. They think they do, but occasionally we have to coax it out of them. But do we know the right questions to ask? Dr. Chapman figured that out as well. He devised some quizzes to help us get there. These simple inquiries help sort out these categories:

  • Receiving gifts From trinkets and baubles to expensive items, some folks just love
  • Quality Time Just being there, hanging out, talking…your time is important.
  • Words of Affirmation Atta boys and ‘good job!’ s can prove you’re paying attention.
  • Physical Touch A hug, handholding, a caress during a conversation…can mean everything.
  • Acts of Service A helping hand without being asked can imply volumes!

Flowers and candy are great, but they can be expensive and quite boring. Learning and really knowing those you care about takes dedication and devotion. And love. Just remember that what you love may not be what they love.

Do you know what everyone loves? A clean house they didn’t have to clean! Let us help you love your people! (This one is easy…)

It’s hard to believe that Covid has been around for only a year. So much has changed in the last 12 months, some of which is pretty normal now: masks, staying home more, and online…everything. Creative dates have been a bit of a challenge with minimal seating at our favorite eateries and theaters. So how do you romance your partner in the middle of a pandemic?

Blessing in Disguise

If there’s one thing this pandemic has shown us, it’s that ingenuity is the new normal. What an opportunity to switch things up! Especially now because maybe there’s been quite a bit of *togetherness* in recent months. It’s difficult to keep a good routine going when the rules are constantly shifting, so rather than resist…embrace the change!

Whether it’s been a few months or a lot of years, relationships ebb and flow anyway. Varying circumstances allow us to see where we might need to make some adjustments, but also where we can add some sparks. Remember the newness of when you first met your partner…close your eyes and recall the butterflies and zinger feelings of anticipation. Zero in on that first kiss…WOW!

Inspired Time

Restaurants and movies are so pre-covid. It’s time to liven things up and make some new memories! Here are some ideas we researched that might be the ticket!

  • Breakfast, not dinner may be just the change you need. At Valentine’s in particular, restaurants (even at a limited capacity and with outdoor seating) also have limited menu options because they plan to be busy. At breakfast, you’re both fresh, seating will be better (and possibly indoors), and you will have the rest of the day together <eyebrows flicking>.
  • Day Dates are a great way to reconnect! Maybe the kids are in school and you have the house/car to yourselves. #1 Rule…no “errands” or “grocery shopping” is allowed! Get takeout from a favorite place and go for a hike!
  • Rent a Luxury Car for the day. Drive around the area or explore another town nearby! Talk, pull over, and admire the scenery, be in the moment.
  • Home is Where the Heart is. Maybe some of these are out of your price range after last year’s economy roller-coaster. A creative date doesn’t have to be costly. Arrange for a sitter if you have kids, or maybe work out a trade with another couple with kids. Light candles and put on some music and just dance with each other.

Feeling Social?

Maybe you need to check in with friends and think a group activity would be a nice switch. Again innovation wins the day! Creative dates can include friends! Some interesting things we found to also help small businesses!

  • Online Cooking Classes! Many local restaurants have been dealt a near-deadly blow to their businesses by the pandemic. Chefs have started online cooking classes on some of their favorite menu items for you to make at home. In some cases, a kit is prepared for pickup (for a fee) and then prepared in your home during a designated class time. A great way to connect with new friends meet local chefs, and maybe try a new place!
  • Virtual AirBnB® has cooking classes and more. Travel the world from your living room!
  • Zoom Newlywed Game could be full of laughs with your favorite friends!

Reconnecting with your partner is super important during these trying times. While routine can get us through the day, it can be a buzz-kill for relationships. We can help set the mood with a house cleaning appointment! Covid doesn’t have to compound anything more than it already has. Get your love on!

10 Reasons To Hire A House Cleaner

10 Reasons To Hire A House Cleaner

10 Reasons To Hire A House Cleaner

1. A Lot of Cleaners Bring Their Own Supplies

Cleaning the entire house requires so many different cleaners. You need one cleaner for the bathroom tile, one for the mirrors, another for the toilet, and one more for the grout… And that’s just for the bathroom. A lot of professional cleaners, however, bring their own supplies (including microfiber cloths, mops, and vacuum cleaners), which saves you money and the hassle of having to stock up and store cleaners.

Trying to go green? There are plenty of cleaners out there who can clean your house from top to bottom using chemical-free products.

2. All of the Dusting  10 Reasons To Hire A Cleaning Service

Let’s review the things in your home that need to be dusted: The tops of tables, table legs, mirrors, art and picture frames, lamps, lampshades, hanging light fixtures, bookshelves, the books on those bookshelves, every single decorative item on every single table and shelf, window sills, the television, ceiling fans, blinds, the top of your refrigerator, underneath your refrigerator… basically every single thing in your home that has a surface. If you’re exhausted just reading that list, just think for a second about how exhausting it is to actually do all of that dusting…

3. The Dreaded Baseboards

10 Reasons To Hire A Cleaning Service
Cleaning the baseboards is one of those chores that feels optional. And it is. Until it isn’t. Because the baseboards are where pet hair and dust and scuff marks gather, which can make even the cleanest home seem dirty. The good news is once the baseboards are clean, your walls and floor will look cleaner as a result. The bad news is this isn’t just a dusting or quick vacuuming situation. To really get your baseboards clean, a wet cloth and cleaning solution are often required. Also: time. And being on your hands and knees. So yeah, you could do this yourself, but why when you can pay someone to do it for you?

4. Cleaning the Bathroom

10 Reasons To Hire A House Cleaner
Did you know you’re supposed to scrub your toilet once a week and your bath/shower every two weeks? Cleaning the bathroom also means wiping out sinks and faucets with cleaner, cleaning mirrors, scrubbing counters, sweeping/mopping the floor, and emptying the wastepaper basket. Even if you have a professional cleaner come in to help, you’ll need to do some of this in-between visits, but just think about how nice it would be not to have to scrub the shower walls ever again? (So nice.)

5. Knobs, Handles, and Switches

Guess what has more germs than almost any other part of your house? Yup, that’s right. It’s all of the doorknobs, cabinet handles, and light switches. And yet, be honest: How often do you clean them with a disinfecting wipe? Probably not at least once a week which is how often you’re supposed to… Good thing a professional will make sure to do it for you.

6. Those Filthy Floors

Vacuuming, sweeping, mopping… It probably seems like no matter how often you do it, it’s not enough. And like it’s a fairly thankless job. Still, whether you have carpet, hardwood, tile, or linoleum, thorough cleaning of your floors needs to happen at least once every one to two weeks in order in order to remove the everyday accumulation of dirt and keep it from building up. Again, of course, this is something you could do yourself—that’s not the point. The point is: Do you really want to?

7. A Professional Will Do a Better Job Than You

Too harsh? Sorry, but still… it’s probably true. Because while you might be an expert with the mop or a dusting ninja, the truth is, there are probably things you either don’t enjoy cleaning (so you put it off) or just aren’t as good at (like dusting ceiling fans or vacuuming under the bed). But just like how you do the very best at your job, that’s what a professional will do when he or she comes to clean your home. Sounds kinda nice, right?

8. You’ll Appreciate Your Home in a New Way

Much like how a sandwich tastes ten times better when someone else makes it, a spotless home feels ten times better when someone else cleans it. There’s really just no better feeling than walking into an immaculate space and knowing that instead of starting in on the never-ending list of chores, you can kick your feet up and just enjoy your sanctuary.

9. You’re Busy

There are a million reasons your schedule is probably jam-packed. You work long hours, you’re taking care of your family, there’s a passion project you really want to achieve this year… Whatever the reason, hiring a professional to help you clean means cutting yourself some slack and giving yourself a break. Which will automatically alleviate some stress. Less stress and a toilet so clean you’ll let the dog drink out of it? Yes, please.

10. Time is Money

Yes, you can clean your home yourself and you may even have the time to do so, but a lot of professional services will do it for you at an affordable rate. This means instead of cleaning, you can be hanging out with friends and family, reading a book, going on a bike ride, or whatever it is you’d rather be doing than spending your entire day mop and vacuum in hand.

Making the Goals Stick

Make the Goals Stick

Here we are again, January of a new year. Fist bumps to everyone! It was a rough one last year, no doubt! Near the end did you start to think about any resolutions or goals for this year? Did you put on a couple of pounds or funds are a tad low? (Hint: we all had a few missteps!) Setting goals to improve is how we flourish…how we learn. We want to offer a few ways we’ve found to help make the goals stick.
Add, don’t subtract!
Much research has been done in this area and the overwhelming consensus is to add good habits instead of subtracting bad ones. There’s a psychological reason that just the thought of something being eliminated, no matter how bad it is for us, is still mentally counted as a “loss”. So, say you want to “lose” weight (the most common of resolutions), how do we approach it without thinking we will also lose some of the food we like to eat?
• Reframe it with better words. You’re not “losing weight”, you’re “getting” thinner/healthier/more fit.
• Add a goal date. By the “X” date, I want to be a size ___.
• Add good and healthy food and that will edge out the not-so-healthy eating habits.
• Start small. Walk before you run. Run before you do a race. Doing too much too fast will secure failure.

Be S.M.A.R.T about the Goal

You may have heard this acronym before. It stands for:
S-Specific. “Losing weight” is too general. Pick a number, of course not too big.
M-Measurable. Using a scale or a tape measure to account for progress shows progress.
A-Achievable. Running a marathon in 6 months when climbing stairs right now winds you is not achievable. Shoot for a 5K, maybe, first.
R-Relevant. If you’re doing something because someone else is or wants you to and you’re like “meh”, you won’t be motivated. What do YOU want?
T-Timed. Set a specific date that you think you can do it. Remember the “achievable” part here. Make the Goals Stick!!

Break It Down

There’s a saying, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”
Similarly, realizing any worthwhile goal will take time…baby steps. Well, how do you know what each bite will look like? Ah! That’s the right question!

Backward is the New Forwards!

Working backward is the way to finding the doable pieces and making the goals stick! It will also show you if your objective fits with the S.M.A.R.T method or if you are aiming for the stars when the moon will do.
• Pick your target date and start date
• Decide what you can do each day/week/month (reasonably) between now and then
• Divide your commitment into the total time between then and now
Clear as mud, huh? We’ll keep with the “losing weight” theme, but you can also apply this to saving money, reading books, fitness levels, and so forth. Say you want to lose 30 pounds by this time next year. It seems like a lot, but if you do some research (and maybe consult your doctor), you may find that it is totally doable.
Next, what can you commit to? A pound a week? What else do you need to do to get there? Dietary adjustments? Will you exercise? Outdoors/home/gym? What’s the time commitment on that?
Then…what’s your reward at the end? Make it BIG! What will make you work to get that prize? The caveat here is that it must be what YOU want. Not to prove yourself to another person. This is no Bueno. Make the Goals Stick!!

Ok, so now…

• Divide your goal into the number of weeks (we chose 1 year/52 weeks)
1 pound a week is…52 pounds! But that’s more than I want to lose!
See? Easily a bite-sized piece! You can adjust for a faster timeline and it would still be workable, or you can mosey your way to a thinner you in a year! But now you see that 30 pounds can be made very stress-free.
If you need some extra time carved out so you can make the goals stick, we’d like to help you! Wouldn’t having your house cleaned be THE BOMB? Check us out!

Clean up your devices

Clean up your devices

Clean Up Your Devices

Your phone, tablet, laptop… is neglected. “WHAT?! “ you say. Arguably an additional appendage for many, with constant scrolling, texting, and picture taking. If we treated our homes like our devices, we’d be in big trouble. It’s time to clean up your devices.

What am I referring to? The clutter. Imagine all those texts as letters and photos as actual physical photographs. The junk email alone would bury us alive!

New Year, New…device?

One of the reasons that people buy new gadgets is that their “old” one is too slow or doesn’t perform as well anymore. Part of that could beeeee….that it’s clogged up. When was the last time you scrolled through your pictures? Do you look at some and think, “What is THAT?” and …keep going? Do you read an email, then go on to the next? How many apps have you installed since you bought the phone? Your phone or laptop could run like new again, not to mention saving you a large chunk of cash!

Like addressing a teenager’s room, it’s time to get busy with a periodic hosing out of your device(s).

Don’t Be Afraid

If you’ve ever done a “delete all” (or similar feature) on any part of your computer and afterward you realized that you really did…delete all of it, that sense of panic that erupts in your gut is no fun! In the early days of home computers, there were no fail-safes, and your data was doomed to the ethers for all eternity. Nowadays there are recovery methods that can undo the dumbest of keystrokes, thankfully. Just know that when the pop-up appears with “Are you sure?” it’s best to be…sure.

Keep the end result in mind…virtual elbow room in your gadget. Room for updates and new games/apps!

 Start Simple

It is generally agreed upon that the 3 largest hogs of space are photos, apps, and email. Start with the easiest part, your photos, and videos. These actually take up a HUGE amount of space on any device. Whether you have an android phone or an apple device, you can delete single or multiple photos at once. Try not to get caught up looking at your pictures, though. We’re cleaning, remember? And unless you save the ones you have left to another storage area (hard/thumb drive), they could be lost forever if something happens to the phone/device. Unlike the “old” days, there are no negatives to reprint the pictures.

Next move to your apps. There are lots of pre-installed apps that many of us never wanted in the first place, but a few may be “vital” to the basic operations.  Most will tell you so when you go to delete them, but the others are there in hopes that you will at least get curious and try them. Nyet. Just like the flyers that load up your mailbox (wasn’t there a “paperwork reduction act” a while back to reduce paper waste?), these also take up space on your electronics. We found this handy video for Apple® for visual learners (love the pause button!), and here’s a quick take for android users.

Get Organized

There are many people who really don’t use computers much anymore. If you are one of those who pretty much conduct all your business (personal and business) on your phone, it’s important to keep things cleaned up and orderly. Imagine living in one room and all your activities must be confined to that one room. It would need to be neat and tidy, right? Though they are small, they can do more than the first home computers put out only 30 years ago. My first PC had a 250MG hard drive. That’s about 10 jpg files now!

Here’s a good roundup of all the areas that you can do to clean up your device(s) including ways to keep it neat and clean.

Technology moves fast. Smartphones can last for years, saving us loads of cash! Just like anything we value, we need to look after them properly. So, clean up your devices.

When the Power Goes Out

When the Power Goes Out

In this time, almost everything we do requires an electrical connection whether it’s a phone, laptop, tablet, or television, it can be a challenge when the power goes out.  Most families can manage for a few hours, but what if…it’s a few DAYS?

Have a Plan

Despite being something you’re used to, it’s never a waste of time to prepare. During cold weather provisions should be made anyway, like:

  • Extra charged up batteries for phones/radios
  • Have a solar charger handy for phones
  • Sign up for emergency text alerts from your utility provider
  • Ways to stay warm
  • At-risk neighbors…plan to check on them.

Because so many things need power these days, and it’s certainly a relief when the power comes back on, that electrical return can surge and can blow out your devices.  Even if you have surge-protector strips, not everything gets plugged into them…like phones. When the power goes out be sure to get important electronics like TV’s and computers unplugged.

But…I’m BORED!

If you already have your plan going and are settling in with stockpiles of snacks and all the important stuff is taken care of, then there’s the “keeping everyone occupied” part of the equation.  If your kids are used to their electronics for entertainment, this could be a trying time for them.  It’s a fantastic opportunity to make some memories! But different families like different things.

  • If you’re a ‘together’ family, board games like Monopoly® or Clue® are long enough to keep everyone happy, but not too long. There are dozens of lists of favorite games out there, including this family-friendly games list, but it depends on everyone’s interests (and age).
  • Instead of a board game, how about getting everyone moving with a game of hide-n-seek? If the house is dark, even better!
  • FORTS! SO much fun and you can call it ‘camping’ in your living room! If you have a wood-burning fireplace, you might even be able to make S’mores.  YUM!
  • If “togetherness” is a little too much for your clan, maybe everyone could get a little reading in.  Books and magazines can fill hours of blank time.
  • It’s a good time to start, continue, or finish some house projects like cleaning out closets or dressers, sorting clothing for charity, or rearranging the furniture.
  • How about an old-fashioned letter-writing or Christmas card campaign? With our mailboxes filled with junk mail, a real-live letter can really lift the mood of:
    • Distant family relatives or someone who may be isolated because of covid.
    • Soldiers abroad.
    • Senior citizens in nursing homes who have no family
  • If the weather is reasonable, you could build snowmen or shovel the sidewalks on your street.
  • Sledding, friendly snowball fights, or forts are also a great way to get some exercise as well
  • Not enough snow?  Maybe a quick yard cleanup party could do the trick!

None of these sound good?  Are you getting “looks” and rolled eyes?  Here are 50 more things to spur some ideas. Have a pow-wow and pick out a couple!

Don’t forget, though, when the power goes out, cleaning can be tough without electricity to see what to clean or run the vacuum.  Give us a call if you need some help getting caught back up and treat your family to a “day off” of chores.

Christmas Through the Eyes of a Child

In this exceptional year of years, you may be wondering how in the world Christmas is going to pan out and if you have kids, doubly so.  May we suggest a different point of view…Christmas through the eyes of a child.

Tap the past…

Consider what you, as a kid, loved about the holidays.  What was your favorite year?  Did you get a gift that sent you over the moon with joy?  Was it a huge family gathering or just a few people? Did you love all the lights and music? If we remember why it felt special, then let the memories be a powerful reminder as well as help motivate us. Indeed, we feel all feel like we’re out of steam.

It’s important to realize that kids have had a rough year too with all the things that have changed.  Maybe they’re doing online classes and can’t see their friends or teachers from school. Everyday activities have been restricted or outright stopped. Draw from their bottomless enthusiasm for the season…what do they think would be a super cool Christmas through their eyes? Their answers may surprise you.

What is their favorite part of Christmas? Watching as gifts slowly gather under the tree? Is there a certain box they can’t wait to open? Do they like baking cookies and waiting for Santa?  Or is it just spending time with the family in their pajamas all day? Capitalize on their responses!

Fresh Ideas!

Perhaps they would like to do a themed tree. One that focuses on superheroes, or a particular color group, or maybe an old-fashioned back-to-basics tree with homemade ornaments and stringed popcorn and cranberries. Doing holiday crafts adds a personal touch and engages creativity…and kids love crafts!

Does your family make contributions to local charities during the holidays? Or perhaps your children know of someone in their class whose family is really struggling because of the pandemic?  Would they like to help them instead? Maybe they want to bake cookies for the doctors and nurses at a local hospital. How about a leg up with some housecleaning? Always a welcome gift! This year the need is greater than usual, and of course, kids are natural ‘givers’, so maybe they have some ideas on what they would want to do to help someone in need. Making it extra special this year might be just the ticket to pop us all out of the dreariness.

Kids never fail to sustain their excitement for almost everything including Christmas through the eyes of your child. In view of a time when we, as adults, have taken a mental beating, let’s allow their enthusiasm and delight in the holidays to lift our spirits and remind us that all is well.

A Clean House House For The Holidays

tips for healthier living

Getting Ready for Guests

A Clean House House For The Holidays, A Clean House House For The Holidays, A Clean House House For The Holidays

Oh, the holidays are upon us! If you have family or friends (hopefully) coming to visit, it’s time to get ready for guests!  There’s food to plan and shop for, cleaning to be done, and decorations to hang.  Busy, busy, busy!

Out of Towners

How many are coming? Whether it’s family or friends, having a number is a good first step.  How long are they staying?  Are more people coming after them? Planning is key, so let’s get a checklist going:

  • What are the dates of their stay? Are they staying with your family or elsewhere?
    • Do you need an air mattress or extra sleeping space? You might need to do some rearranging.
    • Do you need to borrow blankets and pillows from a neighbor?
  • How many kids? And their ages?
    • Do you need games and toys that get them up and moving? Having them all crowded around the TV playing video games isn’t a good idea, though that’s probably what they will want to do.
    • Will the kids be bunking with your kids? You might need to do a good sorting to make room!
  • Grown-ups…do you have enough spare bedrooms for them? Are all the linens fresh? Are there any special needs you might need to plan on?

The holidays with family tend to be fairly laid back.  Fuss enough so you can relax with them and not worry about if the bathrooms are scrubbed, but not so much that you’re stressed out.  This year has been a doozy anyway! Now is probably a good time to hire help with the cleaning. (Call early to get your ideal spot!  We fill up quickly this time of year!)  While they clean you can get ready for your guests by:

  • Cleaning out and making room in the fridge.
  • Organizing the pantry and food cabinets
  • Make sure you have enough dishes, or paper plates, napkins, and utensils.
  • If your family drinks adult beverages, stock up now (prices are great around the holidays!) at your favorite neighborhood liquor store.

Food, Food, Food!

No DOUBT the food bill is going to be a whopper and eating out is probably not an option with the pandemic. Hopefully, the guests will pitch in, but still…you want everyone to have snacks and satisfying meals, as well.  Things to consider:

  • Is this a big party…or a week-long gathering of loved ones?
  • Does anyone have special dietary needs? Do you need to ask about specialty foodstuffs like vegan or vegetarian options, so they feel included?  These kinds of foods are pretty readily available now.  They will appreciate your attention.
  • On the other hand, there are food allergies that you might need to be aware of and avoid as well. Having an illness or medical emergency can ruin a good gathering.
  • Somewhere in the middle is food for a crowd. The people-pleasing fare that is easy for you in the kitchen but delights all who are there to enjoy.

Fill in with treats and snacks that will remind them why YOU are the best relative to visit during the holidays.  Relaaaaax and enjoy it!!

Baking With The Kids

health and well being

Baking with the Kids

November!  The official ping on the grown-up calendar that the holidays, baking with the kids, and all things ‘family’ have begun.

If you bake for gifts, you know how daunting this can be.  There are people you work with, maybe employees and their families, friends, out-of-state/area family…the list can belong! One thing is for sure: cookies and homemade goodies are always a favorite!

Since cranking out a lot of tasty treats takes a fair while, get the kids involved!  It’s a great opportunity to score some fun family time and also teach them a few skills like measuring, mixing, frosting, and decorating.  Baking with the kids should take too much arm-twisting with all the sweetness and bowl-licking ahead!

Where to Begin?

First, gather the family around to make a list of everyone who will receive baked goods.  Are you mailing them?  Do you need gift bags or other kinds of packaging?  Do the kids have friends they want to include?  Their teachers? The neighbors?  Are you going to make special cookies for some people?  Here’s a checklist of to-do’s so all goes as smoothly (and as fun) as possible on a baking day:

  • It’s probably a good idea to make some freezer space to store some ingredients and finished products until they’re ready to be given out.
  • Do you need to clean the oven? Do this before it gets too cold outside to open windows for this process.
  • Mark the calendar for the day(s) you plan to bake, so all hands are on deck!
  • Clear space in the kitchen for mixing and decorating stations, and for cookies to cool.
  • Have a set of bulk recipes that can be done fast and furious for those “surprise!” people or if you’re not into baking that much.
  • Check that you have the right equipment or that what you have is in good condition.
  • Take the kids shopping for the ingredients. They love picking out big bags of chocolate chips or sugar. It can be a learning opportunity to understand how much things are, what ingredients go into making cookies, and why this is a cost-efficient way to give during the holidays.

Baking with the Kids

On the appointed day double check to make sure everything is ready:

  • Is everyone rested? This may sound odd, but things can devolve quickly if there has been some stress or illness. Is it a good day?  Or do we need to postpone?
  • Are our bellies full of good food first? Everyone is less likely to nibble away at the sweetness or have “hangry” outbursts.
  • Put on your favorite music! Do you like holiday music?  Show tunes? Rock and roll?  Turn it up and create a fun atmosphere.
  • Decide which child is in charge of what portion of the project. Do you plan to rotate to keep it interesting…and maybe keep kids from arguing? Of course, keep things age-appropriate, but also a little challenging so learning can happen.
  • Assembly lines help to make sure all the steps are followed properly, and you get good results.

Plan for mishaps like burned fingers or cookies, forgotten ingredients, and spills. Snap a few pics for holiday card making! It might be a good idea to have some backup cleaning help for the next day, but make it fun no matter what and you will make precious memories.

Cleaning 101 For Kids

Cleaning 101 for Kids

Cleaning 101 for kids. Teaching children how to clean can definitely be a chore by itself, but we can all agree that they probably won’t volunteer to help out.  You can put together a Cleaning 101 for kids can make things easier if it’s fun and engaging!  We’ve put together some ideas here for you to help.

While it’s probably not a good idea to have your preschooler do the dishes…not if you want them clean! They can be taught to bring dirty dishes to the kitchen when they’re done.  Age-appropriate jobs help teach children to take responsibility for themselves and can help develop good habits that last a lifetime.

How and when to start?

Even small jobs can help busy parents!  And they can add precious minutes to a family fun time!  Basic tasks like picking up toys and gathering and sorting their own laundry are simple and don’t require long attention spans. Explain that what they do is important to the household to give them a sense of self-confidence and importance.

Set aside some time daily for everyone to pitch in. Put on some lively cheerful music…make it a family affair!  You can finish all at once rather than sporadically throughout the day and each person can appreciate the finished product. Making Chore Charts, including mom and dad, will avoid confusion. Then put them all in one place so everyone can see when the assignments are done.

So, who does what?

When planning your Cleaning 101 for kids, think of a child’s height and physical capabilities.  Little ones are already close to the ground and can look under the couch for toys (or lost items!) far easier than mom or dad. Have a place…a box, a corner, a room…for things and make sure everyone knows where they go.

Younger children can have their own kid-friendly cleaning kit with sponges or clean rags and some Dawn® dish soap and a spray bottle (kids love spray bottles) with water in it.  You can add a little soap or some essential oils if you like.  Have them “spray” the bathroom sink and wipe it clean.  The faucet doesn’t have to be super shiny but maybe the toothpaste drips need to be all cleaned off.  (Maybe take care of the toilet yourself 😉)

Older kids can handle more responsibility like taking out the trash, loading and starting the dishwasher, vacuuming a shared family space, and even some dusting.

Each child should be responsible for their own bedrooms.  Even young kids can be taught how to make their own bed, getting their trash to the kitchen (or garage), light and dark laundry piles, and putting their toys and belongings away, so that mom or dad can get a vacuum through there once in a while.  But while they learn how to clean, you may want an occasional boost from a cleaning service to stay caught up on the corners without having to be too picky with the kiddos.

Nobody likes to do the same thing over and over again, so mix it up with a job jar!  If you draw the same job you did last week, you get to pick again.  Each person will get experience doing all the chores in the house and nobody gets bored!

To Pay, or Not to Pay

There are definite sides to this debate. Mom and dad don’t get paid to do chores. Some believe that this helps give children an understanding of earning money. We suggest you keep a list of “extras” that are above and beyond the normal day-to-day requirements if someone wants to earn money.  Be sure to be clear on the parameters and how much will be paid and make a BIG DEAL when it gets done!

Clarkston Cleaning Is Cleaning For A Reason

October already!? We’re pretty sure that we don’t have to remind anyone that this month is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  But maybe you don’t know that Clarkston Cleaning is a Cleaning for a Reason company.

As we adjust to hybridized school schedules, changing weather, and wondering what the Holidays may look like this year, some things remain unchanged.  Cancer.  It’s still there.  Hopefully, you have not had to experience this awful disease but imagine this year, getting a new cancer diagnosis.

It’s a tailspin.  New patients must see doctors and have tests, process mind-boggling information, and make tough decisions. Not to mention how your family and work-life (even more!) will be turned upside down.  It’s no picnic.  Now, more than ever, we want you to know we are here to help!

Please! Don’t Be Embarrassed!

Usually one of the first things we toss aside is the housecleaning.  If you’re in and out of the house multiple times a week with doctor’s appointments, you just wave it off and say you’ll get to it.  But often, you don’t, so maybe some family or friends pitch in and do some dishes or a load of laundry.  For a while, that will do, but it still only gets partially done, and by the time you really notice it again, it’s a terrible mess…and it can feel embarrassing.  We understand it’s exhausting.  So, you sit down and cry because you want just ONE THING to be NORMAL!  We got you!

Any Cancer

Even though October is adorned with pink ribbons in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, Cleaning for a Reason will help anyone.  All of the cleaning companies volunteer their time and resources, so you don’t pay anything. It is an honor to provide one less thing to worry about to those facing their cancer battles.

What is Cleaning for a Reason?

15 years ago, founder Debbie Sardone saw a need for folks going through months, sometimes years-long, cancer treatments and that it takes a toll on personal finances as well.  She saw an opportunity to help a community member and an idea was born.  Sign up through the Cleaning for a Reason web page and they will set you up with a local cleaning company to help you and your family get through this difficult time. That’s Why Clarkston Cleaning Is Cleaning For A Reason.

Doing Online School

Doing Online School

Doing Online School

In the continuing twists and turns of this pandemic roller-coaster, many parents face the new problem of meeting their children’s ongoing educational needs.  Whether it’s because the schools are still closed or because there are other concerns, jumping into doing online school can be daunting.

How do we do this?  Are there special supplies or requirements?  How involved will parents have to be?

Educate Yourself

Try to remember what it was like when you attended school as a child. In the first few days of school, you became acquainted with your new teachers…and rules.  You were introduced to the basic curriculum that would be covered for that term and given teasers about some of the really cool things to look forward to.  Because doing online school is different in almost every school district, be sure to sign up for any webinars or information seminars that may be offered. Forewarned is forearmed.  Knowing class schedules and what teachers are planning can help your family stay on track and not be sidelined by unexpected deadlines and requirements.  This will also help you to gather the necessary supplies to be ready for the first day of school!

Setting Up

Okay, now that you know “what”, now you have to set up “where”.  Are your children varying ages? Would they be in class, or at the same school together?  Most likely not.  If your high-schooler would be distracted by what their elementary-aged sibling has on their computer screen, then it’s probably best to situate them in separate rooms.  Work with each child to make a dedicated school/study area if at all possible. Things to consider for optimal learning:

  • Make the area as much “like” school as possible
  • Have a desk and a chair. They don’t have beds at school, so don’t allow them to use their beds during their school day.
  • Have a place for everything. Keeping things tidy, especially in tight areas, are better for mental focus.
  • A solid meal before classes start, just like a regular school day, will ensure they don’t have grumbling tummies. Stick to the “school” schedule. Kids aren’t allowed to go get a snack when they want one at school, so don’t let them root through the fridge at home until it’s snack or lunchtime.

Ready, Set, LEARN!

The kids will not be the only ones learning this year.  This will be a group effort from administrators all the way through the student body.  Kids of varying ages will, of course, have different class requirements. Here are some suggestions for doing online school for helping all of your children do the best they can. As always, when taking on something new, be sure to be patient:

  • With teachers and school personnel. This may be the first time they’ve had to undertake online learning and may have limited resources to do so.
  • Your child(ren) as much as you can. In some cases, this may be like moving to another country because things are so different. If they’re unhappy or not doing well, try to find out why.
  • Yourself! If you’re not, or never have been, a teacher then do the best you can. You’re learning too!

Just know that this will be stressful for a while…for all of you.  You got this!  Maybe consider hiring a cleaning service while you’re doing online school.  Taking on the duties of “teacher” on top of your other responsibilities will be challenging enough!  Delegate the cleaning to someone else and enjoy learning with your kids.

The New Normal of Working From Home

The New Normal of Working From Home

The New Normal of Working From Home

Adjusting to the new normal of working from home and “Pandemic Living” has been abrupt and fairly confusing.  Every day there seems to be new guidelines and requirements.  It’s fair to say that many thought that this would blow over in pretty short order, but now it’s clear that …probably not.

So, you’re working from home now. Time to get settled in for the long haul.  How do you make that work?  Space needs to be carved out for you to do your job effectively while not overtaking some area of the house that everyone uses and disrupting the flow of things there.  So let’s look at where to set up shop, even if it won’t be forever.

Important Considerations

If you normally go to an “office” and work at a desk, many employers have internal requirements that can reduce injury or strain caused by poor ergonomics resulting from inferior desks and chairs. It’s important to take this into consideration for your working from home set up as well.  Being uncomfortable at your home desk, however temporary, will eventually take a toll on the quality of your work, not to mention your body.  If you anticipate that this will be even a semi-permanent thing moving forward, perhaps your employer will purchase a new desk and chair for you, or maybe let you bring some of that equipment home for you to use. You’re never worse off for asking, right?

So that everyone has their space, you also need a dedicated space for your work.  Something that you don’t have to take down, say, for dinner every night and one where you can function reasonably without interruption.  Ideally, a room or space with a door so you can shut out the noise and also have a visual barrier to the rest of the household.  The area should be as uncluttered as possible so there is “room” to think and do your job.  Cramming a tiny desk into an overflowing walk-in closet will have you picking up your laptop and moving to the living room in no time.  Be thoughtful about where you are going to work.  It may take a little planning and rearranging, but it should be as close as possible to the work environment you have at the office.

Working from home with the kids!

Having kids at home is another substantial consideration.  They may be thrilled to have you at home, but children, especially younger ones, don’t understand the meaning of needing to earn a living…while they’re at home….during a pandemic.  Adjustments have to be made on all fronts.  Kids thrive with routine because it creates a sense of security, so create one and stick to it.  This will block out time for you to work disruption-free, and your kids will know when you are available and when you’re not.  Be clear about boundaries…like when the door to your work-space is closed, or how long they must wait to talk to you.  This can also help kids to be creative problem-solvers on their own, or to not expect instant responses when they want something.

Be sure that the schedule for everyone is doable in these strange times.  Trade with another trusted parent on child-care, so if you need an extended period of quiet for a big project, they can cover you…and vice versa!  Kids get a change of scenery and you get your stuff done.  BAM!

How others cope with remote working with kids can forge new relationships for you and your children.  Being gentle with yourself until a routine is established is going to be the best way to adapt.

But the housecleaning…!

This may be a good time to consider hiring some help.  The myth that successful people do it all is exactly that…a myth.  Their secret?  They delegate.  Even if you hire professionals to come in and hit the bathrooms, dusting, and floors, you will be miles ahead of your stress.  And that is good for the family during these stressful times.

How Rates Are Determined House Cleaning Services Cost

Some house cleaners might advertise their general rates online, but most require that you request a quote. That’s because they want to know everything about your house and the cleaning it requires so they can calculate an appropriate rate based on the factors we mentioned above and others that they control.

For instance, a common factor that will affect the final rate you’re quoted is if a single person or a two-person team will be cleaning your house. If it’s a single person, such as an independent contractor, it will take them longer to do the job, but they will probably charge less because they are capable of less. A pair of cleaners, like what cleaning companies usually send, can do the job in less time, but may charge more because they will be more efficient.

Residential cleaning rates are usually charged by the hour or by square foot. Usually, you will be charged hourly for quick jobs like a small home or area of a house. Larger areas and whole houses that take more time may get charged by the square foot. Keep this in mind when you compare local cleaning services to make sure you get a fair price.

For example, if your house sustains a lot of extra dirt, stains, pet hair or lots of knick-knacks, they might charge more. This is because they need additional time to dust and products required to clean up after your furry friends. The same goes for homes where the cleaning crew must bring extra supplies. Or, switch between products and equipment often to properly maintain multiple types of surface materials.

Some of these factors you can plan for when you request quotes for house cleaning prices. But, feel free to ask for a break down of those costs if you feel a quote is unusually high for your house. There may be a factor you haven’t thought of yet, or that cleaner just may not be a good fit for you. It doesn’t hurt to negotiate a little though if you really like what a service is offering otherwise.

You Get What You Pay For

Everyone wants a good deal. But, don’t sell yourself short by going with a service just because they have the lowest house cleaning costs. If they skimp on the price, they might also skimp on your service. You may not get the quality cleaning you’re looking for. That’s why it’s important to look at what you’re actually getting for your money.

You need to determine the real value of any house cleaning service. Look at everything offered in the cleaning package and the business as a whole. That includes what kind of services they offer and the extent of their customer service. Everything from how they interact with clients to any perks they offer.

Many professional cleaning services are upfront about what tasks are included in their cleaning plans. Therefor,  you can pick one that includes chores you want done. You can also pick a service that offers any add-on jobs that you are interested in. Now,  you get the kind of cleaning you need instead of going with a cheaper service that is limited in their offerings.

It’s the little things like these that can set the great cleaners apart from the mediocre. Sure, the better ones might charge more, but you’re more likely to get what you want from the experience if you’re willing to pay a little extra.

Actual House Cleaning Costs

Of course, this differs from state to state, but on average you’re looking at anywhere from $25-$50 per cleaning person per man-hour. Where typical house cleaning prices fall in that range in your community will depend on general living costs compared to national averages.

Don’t Shortchange Yourself

It’s tempting to go with the cleaning service that offers the lowest rate. But, do you and your home deserve second-rate service? That’s the risk you run when you go with the cheapest offer. When you invite a cleaning crew into your home, you need to know that you can trust them to do the very best job possible and make what you pay them worth it.

Don’t keep struggling to find professional house cleaning service. Look no further than Clarkston Cleaning Services. Hiring A House Cleaning Service

Hiring A Cleaning Service

Hiring a house cleaning service to come in and clean your home can be stressful. After all, you are opening up your home to people you don’t know. You are trusting them to care for your home thoroughly, but efficiently.

Whether you‘re interested in a long-term contract or you want a one-time deep cleaning. Say, for the spring or after school starts, these concerns are valid.

Today, we will offer you the tips you need to find the best cleaning service for your needs.

#1: Set Clear Expectations About Your Cleaning Needs And Wants BEFORE Looking for A Service

If you are looking for a one-time, deep cleaning when you are moving in or out of a house. Or, a once-a-month deep clean. Maybe, a Weekly or bi-monthly maintenance. Maybe, you have specific tasks you want the service to handle. Things like: cleaning interior windows, dusting hard to reach places, or scrubbing tubs and tile

Some providers offer a set list of tasks they fulfill each time. Some change depending on your requests, and some charge additional fees for special services. Knowing exactly what cleaning tasks you are looking to have done and how often will help. There’s no sense in wasting your time on companies that may not even offer the services you need.

#2: Ask For Referrals, Check References, Read Reviews (But Be Wary)

In today’s “connected” world, it’s easier than ever to ask for referrals. It’s also easy to find online reviews. Ask around on neighborhood groups via Facebook or NextDoor. Valuable information can be found there for recommendations.  A lot goes into hiring a house cleaning service. Find one that suits your specific needs and services your area.

Getting references and recommendations from people you know. Maybe, they have used a service and are happy with. Maybe, the quality and price they have experienced. These are all great ways to find a cleaning service you will want to look into further.

Be wary when reading reviews and ratings. Online services like Yelp, Google Reviews, and Facebook Reviews. Online reviews can be very skewed, as some companies “pay” people for a 5-star, glowing review with discounts and free services.

On the other hand, some people only seek out review sites when they have a “bone to pick.” Unhappy folks tend to turn into keyboard warriors with a mission to make sure everyone knows about their bad experiences.

With this in mind, when looking at the reviews, remember that a few poor reviews are totally expected. Realize that a 100% perfect, 5-star, does-no-wrong reputation may be skewed.  Above all, take the time to really read the negatives. Are there so many that it sends up red flags? Or is it one or two that may have had a bad day.

#3: Find Out What Services Are Offered – Are There Premiums

Once you have chosen a few companies to contact, you’ll want to inquire about the level of detail they offer. Every company will have different policies on what is offered as a standard. They may charge additional fees to customize or add additional services.

Some companies will have a specific checklist each time. They have no variance from one visit to the next. Others will have a rotational tasks that will be performed. Be sure you are aware of what services are offered and what extra fees you may be charged.  Ask what, if any, additional services they offer.

#4: Ask For Documentation

Let’s say, someone breaks something while cleaning your home Or, someone gets hurt. Or, someone takes something of value from your home. If the cleaning service you choose isn’t properly bonded and insured, you may be the one responsible. Some don’t cover breakage.

A reliable cleaning company will offer this information without question. They will provide policy information upon your request. Having the peace of mind is everything. Be sure that the company you have coming into your home will be able to take care of things if something were to happen. Meanwhile, this will be worth the potentially higher rates they may charge over a non-insured company or individual Cleaner.

#5: Ask About The Team Members – Training & Screening

When hiring a house cleaning service, you trusting these folks to come to your home and clean it thoroughly. You also want to be sure they are doing so in a way that is safe for your surfaces, for you, and for them. Ask the company about what sort of training their employees receive before they go out into the field.

Also, you want a company that hires only honest, trustworthy employees, so it is a good idea to ask about their screening process for new hires. A quality cleaning company will have well-trained employees.

Our employees have passed background checks and screenings.

With a trustworthy company that hires reliable employees, you should be able to give them access to your home when you are not there. You can have them clean and secure the home without worry. Certainly, no having to stick around waiting for them to arrive and clean. Also, you don’t have to stay cooped up in a one room while they clean the others.

 #6: Is Satisfaction Guaranteed?

When hiring a house cleaning service. A quality company will stand behind the work performed. They will make things right within a reasonable span of time. If you are unhappy with the cleaning performed and voice your concern, the company should send someone to touch-up clean or offer some sort of compensation ASAP.

Ask about how things are handled if something gets damaged or broken. Accidents happen, and even the most careful of cleaners may break or damage something while they work. Ask beforehand how the company handles these types of situations so there are no surprises if this situation does arise.

6 Home Cleaning Mistakes

6 Home Cleaning Mistakes To Avoid

Cleaning is the key to keeping a tidy and healthy home. Cleaning the wrong way can lead to frustrations, wasted time, and even need for replacements. Though many people might take it lightly some home cleaning blunders can actually end up doing more damage that good. Knowing the mistakes to avoid can help you save time and money. Below are the common six home cleaning mistakes many people make while cleaning and how you can avoid them

1. Combining cleaners

Never mix your cleaners unless the manufacturer clearly indicates to do so. Some mixes can be very dangerous. For example when acids found in many bathroom products mix with bleach, chlorine gas is produced and this can turn fatal. This is not the time to test your mixology skills, leave that to the manufacturer.

2. Using the wrong tool for the job

The problem here is using a tool that is too abrasive for the job. Some tools can scratch your items leaving permanent damage. For example using a hard brush to scrub your carpet. Scrubbing untwists fiber carpet leaving a distorted pile and once the damage is done, there is no way you can reverse it. The best way to clean a carpet is vacuuming it first to remove dirt and debris, using a soft cloth to remove any stains and then using a soft brush and the right shampoo to remove residue dirt. Make sure to use the right tool and cleaner to avoid damaging your items. Generally, use soft materials on abrasive metals and glass, and hard brushes on wood, plastics etc. If you aren’t sure how to handle a cleaning tool or product use the internet or consult a professional.

3. Cleaning in the wrong order

Some people have no idea where to start cleaning. They don’t know whether to start with the windows or the floor, to dust or vacuum first etc. The best way to clean is to start from the top. Dust before you vacuum, you will have particles flying all over the place for you to clean again if you vacuum first before you dust. Also always start with the windows, walls before you finally clean the floor. Always remember to start from the top and work your way down

4. Using more product thinking more is better

It can be tempting to use more cleaning product to get faster and better results. Using more is just wasting the product leaving you a build up of the cleaning product to clean. In addition using more than necessary may be asking for trouble since the product may be too strong as to knock you out or cause problems for people with allergies or asthma in your home. Always use the recommended amount of the cleaning product to avoid problems and to avoid wasting time removing the residue on the sponge and the surface

5. Not following instructions on the package

There is a reason every product comes with instructions. If the product says spray and wait for twenty minutes do so. You will be creating more work for yourself if you get impatient or don’t follow instructions. In addition, you may not get best results from the product by not allowing it it time to take effect. Always make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and to follow them to the latter

6. Using vinegar or lemon on everything because it’s organic and mild

It can be tempting to use lemon or vinegar on all surfaces especially with the emphasis to use organic products nowadays. Lemon and vinegar are acidic and can damage surfaces such as marble, onyx, limestone etc. They permanently dull the appearance of stone, which is quite costly to refinish. Vinegar and lemon are just fine on ceramic tiles and fiberglass. For natural stone, it’s important to stick to products designed specifically for them. If unsure always ask a professional on the best product to use on different surfaces

Using the wrong product to clean your home will not only lead to wasted time and frustrations but can lead to serious damage on your items. Always make sure to read instructions on cleaning products and to ask for help if need be. Avoiding the above-mentioned mistakes can help you save time and money.

If a product does not include ingredients on the label. Call the customer service number on the product and ask the company to disclose the ingredients.

4. Never mix products.
Chemicals in cleaning products can have dangerous reactions with one another. Above all, never mix bleach and ammonia. When they are combined, the mixture is deadly! On the other hand, it’s best not to mix bleach with anything!!

5 Ways A Clean House Improves Your Thinking  5 Ways To Improve Your Thinking

We all love to live in a clean house. Even you are not a cleaning fanatic, there is a peace and satisfaction that comes with being in a clean environment.

Researchers have found a connection between a clean house and our mental well-being. According to a November 2009 Study Bulletin on Personality and Social Psychology, women with high levels of the stress hormone cortisol confessed that their homes were disorderly.

Out of the interviewed, only those who felt their homes were well-organized were happier and at ease.

So, how can a clean home improve your clear thinking? Here are five different ways.

1. Benefits for your body and mind  5 Ways To Improve Your Thinking

This is according to the results of a study by the Physical Activity Department of Indiana University. The experiment involved comparing the physical activity of 998 persons of ages between 49 years and 65 with the level of cleanliness in their homes. Out of those observed, people with clean house seemed more active and healthy. It was established that their physical activity could only be related to the cleanliness in their homes.

Think about it; mopping the floor, arranging seats, dusting and cleaning dishes involves a lot of movement. We can actually burn a lot of calories during this exercise.

Besides, one can opt to be conscious of their position during the activity just like in a workout session. This means, moving in ways to stretch some specific parts of the body to achieve certain results after several weeks of systematic cleaning. This back and forth movements cause our bodies to release out excess energy, toxins and improve blood circulation. Besides losing some pounds, our minds will feel at ease at the end of the exercise.

2. Increases your chances of eating healthy

A research published in a journal of the Association for Psychological Science in 2013 showed that physical order, as represented by orderly environments, influences healthy choices. It is easier to spot an apple in an organized space than in a chaotic room.

Moreover, a recent study by researchers at Cornell University Food and Brand Lab found out that being in a messy environment is stressful. Snacks seem to be our go-to choices when we seek comfort for our already stressed out self.

Still on the 2016 research findings, Brian Wansink the director of the Food and Brand Lab explains that we are likely to overeat when depressed about the situation, which in turn affects our health. A poor eating habit will sooner or later catch up with our physical and mental health.

So, if you stress about not having a clean house (even if you don’t realize), it can affect your eating choices.

3. A clean house = better sleep

It is clear that a high level of untidiness in our homes causes stress and anxiety. This alone is enough to deprive us a good night’s sleep. Besides, there is a way the brain cannot be at peace when there is clutter around. This is because to the brain, clutter signifies incomplete work. We can hardly sleep better when our brain is not at ease.

According to a bedroom survey conducted by National Sleep Foundation in 2011, people with a habit of tidying their bed each morning have a 19% more chance of a better sleep. Seventy-five percent of the interviewees admitted that their sleep is even better when their bedding is clean and fresh. This is because one feels physically relaxed and comfortable in such a bed.

There is nothing better than a good night’s sleep after a busy day at work. One wakes up with a renewed mind, ready to conquer the new day’s challenge. Won’t we all want to give anything just to achieve this? A clutter-free home will do!

4. Fight off infections and illness

Do we even stop to think that indoor air can be more contaminated than outdoors? We are always mindful of the possible pollution in the outside environment and public places. We forget that our number one threat could be right within our homes.

Actually, the US Environmental Protection Agency gives more insight to the idea of indoors being more polluted than outdoors in their official website. According to their background on indoor air quality, the air within many American homes is possibly between two to five times, even sometimes above 100 times more contaminated than outside.

Think of the amount of pet dander, fluffs, mold, bug skeletons and dust mites that may accumulate in a home that is not regularly cleaned. A person who spends most of their time in the house will be inhaling all of these.

It is no surprise one would be complaining of presupposed allergic reactions such as wheezing, running nose, itchy eyes and other problems. Many of these can be prevented by keeping a clean house.

5. Boost productivity

A productive person is a happy person. Our minds work better when there is less clutter around. Going by the findings of a study by Princeton Neuroscience Institute on Interactions of top-down and bottom-up mechanisms in human visual cortex, a home in haphazard condition is a recipe for distraction.

Without clutter in an environment, the mind is more focused and can analyze information quickly. This results in efficiency in any kind of work.

Conclusion

These benefits can trickle down to other aspects of the day. For instance, one will work faster, have time to rest and can actually afford the time to prepare a healthy meal. Such a person is also highly likely to retire to bed early, not to mention enjoy a comfortable sleep.

The lesson is, for a clear mind and healthier life, do what you can during the day to keep your home clean, neat and orderly. It will do your mind and body a world of good.
